“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” - Carl Jung
Goal:
The goal of analytic psychology is to encourage the emergence and understand of material from both the person and the collective unconscious” (Seligman & Reichenberg, 2014, p. 92)
The goal of analytic psychology is to encourage the emergence and understand of material from both the person and the collective unconscious” (Seligman & Reichenberg, 2014, p. 92)
Basic Principles of Analytic Psychology:
The Components of the Psyche
The Conscious Mind: includes the ego, the persona, two attitudes, and four functions
The Collective Unconscious
(Seligman & Reichenberg, 2014, p.88-91)
The Components of the Psyche
The Conscious Mind: includes the ego, the persona, two attitudes, and four functions
- Ego: center of the conscious mind; gives us our sense of the world and our reality
- Persona: the idealized side of ourselves that we show to the outside world; the collective psyche
- Attitudes: extraversion and introversion
- 4 Functions:
- Thinking
- Feelings
- Sensation
- Intuition
The Collective Unconscious
- The storehouse of latent memory traces inherited from the past
- Example: fear of the dark, fear of snakes
- The Self: a central archetype
- Regulating center of the personality
- Integrating and balancing the needs and messages of the conscious, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious
- Anima/animus:
- Anima - the psychological feminine component in a man
- Animus - the psychological masculine component in a woman
- Both evolved from generations of experience
- Two functions: they are part of the Self and are also projected onto others
- Influence how we feel about and present the masculine and feminine sides of ourselves
- Shape our relationships, especially with the other gender
- The shadow:
- Opposite of persona
- Manifested in both the collective and the personal unconscious
- We do not wish to acknowledge our dark side, so we attempt to hide it from ourselves and others
- Potential to create thoughts and actions that are socially unacceptable and evil
- Embraces the socially undesirable
- Unique to each individual and forms over that person's lifetime
- Includes memories of thoughts, feelings, and experiences that were forgotten or repressed
- Can be triggered by daily stimuli
- Complexes: dynamic structures of the personality; located in the personal unconscious
- Although unaware of it, it impacts our daily lives
