Techniques of person-centered theory
The Necessary and Sufficient Conditions of the Therapeutic Process
- A relationship exists - two people are in psychological contact
- The client is in a state of incongruence, which makes him/her vulnerable or anxious
- The therapist is congruent in the relationship (Genuine or authentic)
- The therapist experiences unconditional positive regard for the client
- The therapist experiences & attempts to express empathic understanding of the client's internal frame of reference
- The therapist's unconditional positive regard, empathic understanding, and congruence must be perceived by the client, at least to some degree
Nondirectiveness
- Emphasis on the importance of clients taking the lead and being the focus of the treatment process
